Back to school is here and the West Chicago Police Department would like to share some practical advice to help keep children safe from some dangerous situations:
- Do not write children's names on the outside of backpacks, folders, binders, etc., as a stranger can read them and make children believe they know them.
- Remind children of the basics of stranger danger: A stranger is someone you don't know and you should NEVER talk to strangers, get into cars with strangers or accept gifts from strangers.
- When walking to and from school or the bus stop, children should always use the buddy system and walk with a friend, neighbor or family member.
- Remind children it is not safe to take short cuts during their travels as an adult may not see them if they need help.
- When crossing a street, all children should cross where a school crossing guard is stationed. If there is not a crossing guard in the area, cross at the marked crosswalks.
- When travelling on a bus:
- Never step off the curb as the bus is approaching, wait until it has come to a full and complete stop.
- Do not stand up or walk around the bus while it is in motion.
- When outside of the bus, always stay within the driver's view.
- When crossing the street near a stopped bus, always look both ways even though the traffic seems to have stopped.
- If your children encounter a bully:
- Teach them not to fight but try to work it out using words.
- Tell children not to be ashamed or embarrassed and be sure they report any/all incidents to an adult.
- It is recommended that children know their name, address, and telephone number in case they get lost or in trouble.
The West Chicago Police Department wishes all students and parents a safe and happy return to school!
