Special Olympics Club Fundraiser

Beginning with the pre-game welcome by West Chicago Mayor Mike Kwasman at the Special Olympics Club basketball game fundraiser Thursday, January 5, 2012, it was evident that everyone was a winner, no matter what the score was. Members of the Special Olympics team played on the West Chicago and Winfield Police Department teams. "The kids and the cops had a great time," said Kwasman. Club athletic director Dave Hempe said, "We had a great turn out—families of the players and many from the community. Dirk Enger (District 6 DuPage County Board member) also attended. " He added that members of the West Chicago Police Department donated shirts for all the players and also manned the concession stands, plus sold Special Olympic shirts and hats. Another highlight was the half time entertainment by the West Chicago Steppers, a Community High School District 94 dance club. "The crowd was very enthusiastic when they performed," said Hemke.

Persons unable to attend the fundraiser and wishing to donate may contribute by making a check to WeGo Wildcats Special Olympics Club and mail to the attention of Kathe Doremus at State Bank of Illinois, 600 E. Washington St., West Chicago, IL 60185-2318.

Hemke said the club and police department are considering other joint fundraisers, such as a spaghetti dinner and a 5K walk/run.
