Greenest Regions Compact
I am pleased to share the news that the City of West Chicago will be joining other area municipalities that are endorsing the Greenest Regions Compact, an initiative of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, to voluntarily improve the regions air, water and land quality.
The Greenest Regions Compact is intended to serve as a guide by outlining a number of cost effective environmental sustainability measures that a city may adopt. These measures were designed to enhance health and safety, reduce the consumption of energy and fossil fuels, conserve water, and reduce hazardous and solid waste and air pollution emissions.
I am equally proud to say that our City had already been implementing several measures identified in the Compact as part of our ongoing public works programs. We have been ‘walking the talk’ with techniques used to control storm runoff, sediment control, and soil stabilization during and after construction projects; by maintaining odd/even designated sprinkler usage; with E-waste recycling through the SIMS recycling event held in October 2007; by offering curb side recycling to residents and by maintaining an active parkway tree maintenance program that promotes maximum tree cover.
We will continue to take a leadership role by adopting environmentally friendly programs wherever possible and we hope our actions inspire our residents to do likewise. After all, it’s up to us to preserve our planet for future generations!
Respectfully,
Michael B. Kwasman, Mayor
Editor’s Note: Look for information booths at this year’s Blooming Fest, Saturday, May 17th, to learn more about issues critical to safe-guarding our environment. Members of the West Chicago Environmental Commission will also be there passing out free compact fluorescent light bulbs. These are designed to use less energy, about 70% less than incandescent bulbs, and have a longer rated life.
