Boards & Commissions
The City of West Chicago is an active community with a vibrant volunteer spirit. The volunteers who serve on city boards and commissions exemplify outstanding community involvement.
Appointments are typically reserved for residents and are made by the Mayor, with the consent of the City Council, and based on experience and interest. A list of boards and commissions is provided below.

Commission meeting are held at City Hall, 475 Main street (unless otherwise noted) and are open to the public.

CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
The Commission meets the 1st Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m., at Gallery 200, 200 Main Street. The Commission has no vacancies.
The duties of this committee include but are not limited to the following:
• Enriches the lives of all West Chicago residents through the support of cultural arts activities • Sponsors art shows, special events and workshops • Maintains local artist network

HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMISSION
The Commission meets the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. The Commission has no vacancies.
The duties of this committee include but are not limited to the following:
• Identifies property, structures or areas that are historically significant • Provides designation of property/structures as Landmarks or Historic Districts • Review proposed changes to Turner Junction Historic District • Provides an array of programs and services to the city

PLAN COMMISSION/ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
The Commission/Board meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. The Commission has no vacancies.
The duties of this committee include but are not limited to the following:
• Holds public hearings on application for zoning map amendments and planned unit developments • Holds public hearings on proposed text amendments to zoning ordinances and application for special use permits • Makes recommendations and writes advisory reports

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
The Commission meets bi-monthly, on the 1st Wednesday – January, March, May, July, September, November. The Commission has 1 vacancy.
The duties of this committee include but are not limited to the following:
• Advises City Council on environmental issues on a case-by-case basis

YOUTH COMMISSION
The Commission meets the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m., at the West Chicago Police Department, 325 Spencer Street. The Commission has 1 vacancy.
The duties of this committee include but are not limited to the following:
• Assists in coordinating and integrating plans for providing positive alternatives • Monitors and supports advocates for youth • Conducts studies and surveys related to juvenile issues and uses these resources to assist in addressing the needs of these youths.

CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
The Commission meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the West Chicago Police Department, 325 Spencer Street. The Commission has no vacancies.
The duties of this committee include but are not limited to the following:
• Ensures that city impartially recruits and selects qualified candidates for employment • Hears employee discipline cases
