Code Enforcement
Striving to help residents and owners maintain their properties in conformance with the International Property Maintenance Code is a matter of public health and safety.
City inspectors are responsible for advising residents and property owners when they find there is non-compliance with the code either through their own observation or from another person’s complaints.
Violations include such things as accumulation of trash and debris, high weeds, parking on the grass and inoperable vehicles. When the inspector identifies a violation, the owner is provided a correction notice and given a chance to correct the violation. If the violation is not corrected, a citation is issued and the owner is required to appear in court, where a judge will determine if there is a violation, and the amount of the fine.
Additionally, anyone owning a rental property is required to obtain an annual Rental Dwelling License (PDF - 847k). The City of West Chicago inspects all residential rental properties on a regular basis to verify that they comply with the minimum life safety requirements. Each year a letter will go out to all rental unit owners requesting that the owner schedule an inspection. Call 630-293-2200 extensions 131 to obtain a rental license.
Community Development is responsible for investigating complaints regarding over-occupied residential structures. Overcrowding can result in dangerous and unhealthy living conditions. Fires in overcrowded residences can be especially threatening to the occupants. It is the goal of Community Development to eliminate this practice in the City. If after determining a residence to be overcrowded, the owner is asked to reduce the number of occupants to the maximum limit allowed by the City Code. Failure to comply will result in legal action.
