West Chicago Honors Two Deserving Students and One
Exceptional Teacher
West Chicago,
Illinois: June 5, 2007 - City officials honored three individuals from
Community High School District 94 at a City Council meeting on Monday,
June 04, 2007. Students Ashley
Conway, and Ralph Calleros were recognized for qualities exemplifying
proven achievers ~ determination, perseverance and fortitude. Teacher
Donald Zabelin was chosen for his outstanding dedication to the students
at Community High School District 94 and for personal achievements that
set him apart and establish him as an excellent role model for other
teachers.
Early in March, then
Acting Mayor Michael Kwasman, sent a letter to District 94 Superintendent,
Dr. Lee E. Rieck, announcing the City's first annual recognition program.
Mayor Kwasman sought two students, one to be honored for academic
excellence and one to be honored for athletic excellence, as well as one
extraordinary teacher.
Explaining the
criteria, Mayor Kwasman wrote, "The students we seek to honor may not
necessarily carry the highest grade point average or the school record for
points scored, but rather, they should exemplify the qualities of proven
achievers ~ determination, perseverance, and fortitude. We are looking for
students who inspire us for their ability to rise above the challenges set
before them in the classroom and the playing field and who put forth their
'personal best.'" He was delighted with Dr. Rieck's
nominations.
Graduating senior,
Ashley Conway suffered the loss of her mother when she was in the 6th
grade. As the oldest of three girls, she persevered with her academic life
and has consistently remained on the school's honor roll. She also became
extensively involved in extracurricular activities, with leadership roles
in several of them. She volunteered with the Carol Stream Park District
and recently completed the Carol Stream Citizens' Police Academy. Her
guidance counselor regards her a young woman who will succeed and who is
set on achieving her goals.
Ralph Calleros, also
a senior, spent his early life in an urban neighborhood, surrounded by
negative gang pressures. After moving to West Chicago, he challenged
himself to become involved in high school athletics and worked at making
healthier social choices. He played football for four years and wrestled
for three years. The Athletic Director at Community High School found
Ralph to be an extremely hard worker as a football player - one who was
good with other people.
Dr. Rieck's
nomination of Business Education teacher and tennis coach, Mr. Donald
Zabelin was equally appreciated. Mr. Zabelin's record of service to his
school has been outstanding and demonstrates leadership and initiative
through his organization and implementation of extra-class activities and
enrichment programs.
