West Chicago Police Dispatched to Scene of Accident

West Chicago, Illinois: September 25, 2007 - Officers from the West Chicago Police Department were dispatched on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at approximately 8:11 p.m., to a personal injury accident involving a motorcycle, which occurred on the southbound lanes of Illinois Route 59 at or near Blair Street.

As the officers arrived, they found William Rezac (Rider) 55 years of age and Deborah Atkinson (Passenger) 51 years of age near the intersection of Illinois Route 59 and Stimmel Street. The 1999 motorcycle ridden by the couple at the time of the accident was located near the intersection of Illinois Route 59 and Pomeroy Street, approximately a block south of where the passengers were found and two blocks south of where the collision took place. Both Atkinson and Rezac were transported to Central DuPage Hospital by ambulance, where they were treated for their injuries. Atkinson later succumbed to her injuries. Rezac was airlifted to the Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.

At the scene, the officers were informed that the offending vehicle, which was described as a dark color SUV fled the scene southbound on Route 59. Minutes later the vehicle, a 2000 Red Pontiac Montana, was located on Forest Avenue at Easton Avenue. The Montana had heavy front end damage consistent with having been involved in a traffic collision.

During the course of the investigation, Luis Alvarez, M/W, born on July 12, 1983 was identified as the driver of the offending vehicle at the time of the accident. An arrest warrant was issued for Alvarez on Sunday, September 23, 2007. He is a resident of the 800 Block of Hill Avenue in unincorporated Kane County, Illinois.

Alvarez was arrested by the Grand Rapids, MI Police Department shortly before mid-night on Sunday, September 23, 2007. He is being held at the Kent County (Michigan) Jail on a $500,000 warrant issued out of DuPage County, Illinois for Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident. He will remain at the Kent County Jail pending an extradition hearing.
