West Chicago, Illinois: November 30, 2007 – Holiday excitement came early to four West Chicago elementary schools when City of West Chicago Mayor Michael Kwasman paid a visit to announce the winners of a City sponsored essay contest and to extend a personal invitation to each to help him light the official tree in downtown West Chicago at tomorrow’s Frosty Fest celebration.

The following students submitted award winning essays for their age category on the theme of
My Favorite Things about West Chicago:

              Grades 1 & 2:

              Robert Fortelka – Turner School

              Grades 3 & 4:

Stephen Burns – St. Mary’s School

              Grades 5 & 6:

              John Maguire – Wegner School

The essays, which are posted on the City website, (Link: 2007 Favorite Things Essay - PDF - 16k) included favorite things, places and people such as train history and the City Museum, architecture, foliage, Fireman Lee, Police Officer Leo and Taystee Freeze ice-cream. “We learned a great deal about a wide range of favorites from all the students that participated and we value each one of them. Our students are our City’s future,” said Mayor Kwasman.

Among the many wonderful sentiments expressed in the essays received by the City, Wegner School student John Maguire may have summed it up best when he wrote: “None of these things compare to the generous people in West Chicago. Some are so kind they’ll help you when you need another quarter, or dollar. Then there is the plain kindness. When you fall, they pick you up, and when you ask, they answer. These people are so great, nowhere else in this world could you find a kinder group of people. I believe the people are the best part of West Chicago.”

The contest was a new element of the annual Frosty Fest event, presented by the City of West Chicago and the West Chicago Park District, which is scheduled for Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The seasonal celebration takes place downtown and includes a Frosty Procession, grand tree lighting, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, reindeer games and crafts, local music groups, live reindeer and more.
