IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

West Chicago's Artist in Residency Program
Presenting Artist Berit Nørgaard from Copenhagen, Denmark

Berit Nørgaard arrives at the West Chicago City Museum for an interactive community project titled,
If I Can Do It, You Can Do It Too!
West Chicago, Illinois: September 14, 2009 - The West Chicago City Museum, in collaboration with People Made Visible, Inc., welcomes the third artist-in-residence, Berit Nørgaard of Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of their continuing international artist-in-residency program. Nørgaard’s project IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT TOO, is an interactive community project bringing people together to learn and teach tasks, skills, and talents.

Based out of the City Museum, at 132 Main Street, West Chicago, community members of all ages are invited to take part in this exciting venture by submitting a wish to learn something new or offering to teach a skill. No wish is too small, crazy, or ambitious. Nørgaard will work to match local people willing to share their talents by organizing teaching sessions. Through interacting with others in the community, one can find a manageable solution to a daily challenge; or be inspired to act out a dream after listening to the experiences of another. The thesis is that the solution or dream may be fulfilled by finding a helpful soul willing to share their knowledge.

The project IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT TOO, offers an “old school” method to sharing knowledge that is free and readily accessible to all. Those wishing to participate should write a short statement on what they would like to learn and why, including name, age, phone number and email address. Submit wishes to you-can-too@hotmail.com, or stop by the City Museum. Forms may be submitted after business hours through the City Museum’s mail slot. Nørgaard will also be available at the City Museum on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. from Wednesday, September 9 through Saturday, September 26, 2009. Wishes will be accepted through Wednesday, September 23, 2009.

The results of the project will be put together in a pocketsize Do It Yourself (DIY) publication containing the list of requests of things to learn, plus the local experts' how to instructions. Participants are not required to have their names appear in the publication.

Berit Nørgaard is an artist working with the social potential of everyday-life. She is specifically interested in art operating as part of society. That is to say, art which is being used as an integrated tool to suggest creative solutions and new lines of action in our daily life. Her practice focuses on human relations and interactions. With themes connected to daily experience, Nørgaard's projects invite people to make small exchanges. The aim is to engage the other as an attentive potential that forms new perspectives on how to go about living. She suggests that all it takes is to listen and dare to respond to what one hears. For more information about Nørgaard and her various projects, visit her website http://www.beritnoergaard.dk/.
