On Saturday, September 25th, the CHS Education Foundation will honor the 2010 Distinguished Alumni at their Autumn Flame event. Tom Marziani, Class of 1943, will be the first recipient of the CHS Distinguished Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship. Also honored will be Michael C. Lach, Class of 1986, who will be awarded the first CHS Distinguished Alumni Award for Education. Tom Marziani, who began his distinguished career in the food industry, became the Vice President of Food Manufacturing for Sara Lee. In 1970, Mr. Marziani became the Vice President of Manufacturing for Jel Sert and helped established the Realty Division of Wegner Development. He served as the general contractor in building the Jel Sert Industrial Park as well as building 15 industrial buildings, 180 townhomes and 220 upscale residences. Mr. Marziani also assisted in the design and building of the current West Chicago Train Station and was involved the initial stages of Fermilab. He has served as Board President for West Chicago Elementary School District #33, the Board Chairman for the DuPage County Airport, and as a director and officer for the West Chicago Chamber of Commerce. He has been involved with the West Chicago Sister Cities program both visiting and hosting guests from Taufkirchen, Germany. In 2006, Mr. Marziani was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the West Chicago Chamber of Commerce.
Michael C. Lach is currently the Deputy Secretary and Special Assistant at the U.S. Department of Education. In 1990, after receiving his B.A. in physics with a minor in public policy from Carleton College, Mr. Lach began teaching biology and general science in New Orleans as a charter member of Teach For America. At the same time he earned teaching certificates from Loyola and Tulane Universities. By 1993, he was Director of Program Design at Teach For America's national corps office in New York City and, in 1995, he received an M.A.T. in Science Education from Columbia University.
Mr. Lach returned to Chicago to accept a position teaching environmental science and physics at Lake View High School and earned a second M.A. T. in Education Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University and also pursued a doctoral in Urban Educational Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2002, Mr. Lach was named Director of Science in Chicago Public Schools responsible for K – 12 science teaching and learning in 600 city-wide schools and then became the Director of Mathematics and Science for all K – 8 schools. In 2007, he was promoted to Officer of Teaching and Learning in Chicago Public Schools encompassing curriculum selection and implementation for all academic content for 400,000 students, developing the skills of 25,000 teachers, 600 principals and all area superintendents. Mr. Lach has received numerous awards and recognitions including Golden Apple Foundation finalist 1995, Outstanding Physics Teacher of the Year by the Illinois section of the American Association of Physics Teachers in 1999, and the 2000 Radio Shack National Teacher Award recognizing Mr. Lach as one of the top 100 technology educators in the United States. He served as the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow, Washington D.C., and assisted with the development of the National Science Education Acts of 2000.
