West Chicago, Illinois: August 12, 2010 - The Friends of the West Chicago City Museum's August drawing winner will receive the Community High School Commemorative Ornament AND the Tastee Freez Commemorative Ornament in honor of a new school year and the final days of summer.

Even though a High School District was not created until 1921, high school classes were held in several elementary schools as early as the 1870s in West Chicago. Overcrowding in the mid-1920s moved voters to approve building a high school. Construction of Community High School, captured in the ornament, was completed in 1926 with the first classes beginning September 23rd. The first class of 27 students graduated on June 11, 1927. Additions were made to the building in 1954, 1964, 1978 and 1998.

Stop by the City Museum to sign up for the August drawing and check out the current exhibit A Primer Primer, which combines art, history, and stewardship through a look at prairies. Learn about local West Chicago history in another exhibit titled Building Community.

There is no fee to enter for a chance to win the ornaments. Participants must just stop in the City Museum and fill out an entry card to participate in the random monthly drawing. Museum gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
