COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT #94
SELECTED AS
NATIONAL MODEL FOR CIVIC EDUCATION

June 30, 2008: West Chicago, IL - Community High School District #94 has been selected as one of seventeen schools across the nation to act as an official Civic Learning Example. The Civic Mission of Schools initiated a federal drive to instill the importance of civic education in all schools. CHS has been chosen as a model school to illustrate how to implement civic education. District #94 is the only school in Illinois to have been selected.

Lisa Willuweit, CHS Humanities Division Head, states “American education was founded for the purpose of having an educated citizenry who could make informed decisions in voting and keep our democracy alive. The current testing culture places emphasis on gathering knowledge for a test and not necessarily applying that knowledge to life. The Civic Missions of Schools was interested in how the Social Studies Department weaves civic education into all of courses. They were interested in how we spiral our curriculum, where each class builds on the class before in the sequence, as well as our use of essential guiding questions to drive the focus of each course’s curriculum. The Civic Missions of Schools was specifically interested in how our Government and Community Leadership classes promote effective citizenship. All CHS students take required Social Studies classes so all of our students experience civic education.”
