West Chicago, Illinois: May 17, 2010 – Census takers will be making house calls in West Chicago to those who have not sent back their Census forms. These workers have been hired by the Census Bureau to ensure accurate representation of all neighborhoods in the City. Participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law.
The Census Bureau wants you to know how to identify the Census Taker:
- First ask to see their ID. All census workers carry official government badges marked with just their name; they may also have a "U.S. Census Bureau" bag
- Note that the census taker will never ask to enter your home
- If you're still not certain about their identity, please call the Regional Census Center at (630) 785-2900 to confirm they are employed by the Census Bureau
- Answer the census form questions for your entire household (you must be at least 15 years old to answer questions) so that the census taker can record the results for submission to the Census Bureau
Census takers will make repeated visits to a household if first attempts are unsuccessful in finding the resident at home. If preferable, a scheduled visit with the census taker may be pre-arranged by calling the Regional Census Center at (630) 785-2900.
Assistance is available for non-English speaking respondents. Census takers will have a flashcard containing a sentence about the 2010 Census written in approximately 50 languages. If a resident indicates the need for a different language in order to communicate, the census crew leader will reassign the case to a census taker who speaks that language.
