West Chicago, Illinois: May 10, 2010 - The City of West Chicago Police Department wants the public to know of an important program that resulted from a tragic car accident that took place in 1992, when a 13-month old Illinois boy named Chad was riding in a car driven by his babysitter. That vehicle was involved in a terrible car accident in which the babysitter was killed. Chad was injured: he suffered from a minor concussion, had several cuts to his face and had a broken leg. Because of his inability to tell the first responders his name, no one was able to quickly identify him or notify his parents. Luckily, one of Chad’s cousins was a nurse working in the emergency room to which he was transported. Chad’s parents were quickly notified and his injuries were treated.
Chad’s mother worked with the State of Illinois to help promote car seat safety and during this partnership, the CHAD sticker was created. CHAD stands for Children Have An iDentity. The sticker lists the child’s name, birth date, address, parent information, physician contact and emergency contact. It is encouraged that all parents complete a CHAD sticker for each car seat that is being used by a child. Once completed, the sticker can be placed in the right corner (the child’s right) under the cushion or center back of the safety seat. This way easy identification and notification can be made during an emergency.
CHAD stickers are currently available at the West Chicago Police Department, 325 Spencer Street, and are free of charge.
