West Chicago's Bicycle Registration Program Peddles Awareness

West Chicago, Illinois: April 27, 2010 – The West Chicago Police Department would like to remind its residents of their Bicycle Registration Program. This program allows any resident (if under the age of 17, a parent/guardian must enroll) to register their bicycle by giving the police department all the information on that bicycle, should it ever be lost or stolen. Or if a bicycle is found, the police department can quickly identify and locate the proper owner because it had been registered in the program.

Registering is simple. Stop by the police department for a form, or download now: Bicycle Registration Form (PDF - 271k). Completed forms should be returned to the West Chicago Police Department where the registered owner will receive a numbered sticker. That sticker should then be adhered to the bicycle for easy identification.

Enrolling a bicycle in this program does not prevent bicycles from getting lost or stolen. Here are a few safety tips that all bicycle owners should follow:
  • Never leave a bicycle unattended.
  • If you must leave a bicycle unattended, be sure to secure it to a fixed object with a chain and a lock.
  • If you are unable to secure your bicycle, keep it within eyesight at all times.
  • Never leave a bicycle outside overnight, secure it in a garage, shed, etc.
  • If your bicycle does get lost or stolen, call 9-1-1 immediately.
