Call for Art - City of West Chicago's Banner Project Competition
Submission Deadline: February 1, 2009
West Chicago, IL: January 15, 2009 - The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission invites accomplished and emerging artists, with a connection to the City of West Chicago, (either through residence, work or school), or currently living in the Chicagoland area to submit digital files of original art for consideration for the Community Banner Project Competition. All media are welcome, with no limitation to technique or subject matter, as long as the theme revolves around “Faces.” A jury committee will select up to 20 works of art including at least, but not limited to, 10 artists with a West Chicago connection. Each winning design will be reproduced and featured in the 2009 West Chicago Banner Exhibition. Artists selected will receive credit on both banner and in printed material related to the exhibition. A reception honoring the selected artists will take place during the annual Blooming Fest, held on Saturday, May 16, 2009. At that time, the general public will be invited to vote for an artist/banner to receive the People’s Choice Award.
Banner Specifications:
Banners measure: (h)60” x (w)30” with text, image field measures approx: (h)42” x (w)30". The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission will work with artists to obtain proper file sizes for reproduction if selected. However, all submissions should reflect the size specifications to avoid cropping. The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission is responsible for banner printing cost and banner installation.
Submission Specifications:
An entry is comprised of up to 3 JPEG images at 72 dpi measuring (h)7” x (w)5”. All files should be numbered and named with the artist’s last name and first name. Ex.: 01Lastname_Firstname.jpg and submitted via email to: cultural@westchicago.org. Please write: ‘WC 2009 Banner Entry’ in the subject line, and list the following for each submitted file: Number: Title, Year, Media, and Dimension. Also, include full name, address, phone number and the source of your West Chicago Connection, if you have one, in the body of your email. Please also respect that no additional support materials will be accepted at this time. All entries must be original and executed within two years of entry date. Entries must be received by February 1, 2009. Incomplete and/or late entries will not be reviewed.
Judging:
Judging of submissions will be based on JPEG files only. JPEG files submitted must represent actual work. West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission reserves the right to refuse to exhibit any work it deems unacceptable due to significant departure from JPEG representation or inappropriate content. Submitted and accepted artwork will not be used for any other purpose.
Juror: Nate Larson
Larson earned his MFA from Ohio State University in 2002 and a BA with Distinction from Purdue University in 2000. He currently serves as a visiting professor at RIT and holds a tenured appointment at Elgin Community College, where he coordinates the Photography program in the Department of Art. Larson is also an accomplished internationally exhibited artist, who has managed various exhibitions at the Safety-Kleen Gallery One, John R. Grady Gallery of Photographic Art (at ECC) and the Aurora Public Art Commission.
Exhibition/Reception:
The exhibition runs from May 1 – September 1, 2009, a reception honoring the selected artists will take place during the annual Blooming Fest on May 16, 2009. Time and location: TBA.
